Quietly in the background, the ocean regulates our Earth’s climate, cycling 83% of the planet’s carbon and storing much of it in sensitive coastal habitats and deepwater sediments. Some of this “blue carbon” has been locked away for centuries, millennia even… but habitat loss, seabed disturbance and destructive fishing practices are now releasing it back into the system at an unprecedented rate. But what does this all mean for us and our fight against the climate crisis?
In this short primer for FjordStrong, I outline what blue carbon is, why it matters, and how zero-impact marine monitoring can support the protection and management of these critical ecosystems.
